This last week or so has certainly been a test of this whole mothering two children thing! Phew! Friday life finally got back to normal, and no one was happier than me! Last weekend I noticed Jackson had swollen tonsils as well as white spots/streaks on the back of his throat. We kept him home from school on Monday, and I took both boys in to the doctor since Graham had had a yucky cough for a week and any mucous coming up when he coughed or out of his nose was green. The report was just bad colds. Jackson's strep test came back negative, but they did prescribe a nasal spray because the doctor thought it was a cold on top of his allergies. Ok, fine. Tuesday morning, however, he woke up with a weird rash--it started on his bottom and face. Isolated red bumps slowly spread over his torso throughout the morning. I am not good at the wait-and-see pediatric advice, so I had Hallie come over to give me her opinion, and she definitely thought it was hives. Ok, hives I could deal with--I had been worried it was chicken pox!!! Off we went to Target for oatmeal bath and Aveeno lotion. I got him in the bath as soon as we got home before his nap and then lotioned him up real good, and he seemed to feel better. Unfortunately, Graham was due to eat as we got home from Target. It was 12:30 already though, and I knew Jackson needed to go to bed sooner than later. So, Graham had to sit in his carseat and scream while I got Jackson's bath ready and him all settled. It was SOOO sad :( Truthfully, I rarely make Graham wait when I need to choose since he's totally helpless, but I HAD to get Jackson feeling more comfortable!!! Even though it was a rational decision, it wasn't any easier to listen to Graham's hungry cries. We got Jackson settled in the bath, and I sat right down on the floor to nurse Graham! We were able to keep Jackson company that way. While both boys napped, the advice nurse called back and suggested giving Jackson Children's Zyrtec for his hives. Benadryl makes him jumpy, so we were looking for an alternative. So, after naptime, I loaded the boys back up in the car for our second trip to Target. We got the Zyrtec and I gave him a dose right in Target after we bought it. Jackson was still in pretty good spirits as the night went on, but we had an early bedtime all the same.
Mother of the year right here: Jackson woke up pretty early, so I brought him in bed with us to watch TV while Graham and I kept "sleeping." I finally stumbled out of bed a bit later to go let our neighbor's dog out, so it wasn't until I came back home that I noticed how BAD Jackson's rash had gotten! His face was really red and splotchy, there was the lacy red rash all over the rest of his body, and his eyes were looking swollen! Plus, he was itchy. I put him right into an oatmeal bath and called the doctor. Because his eyes were affected they definitely wanted to see him. So, off we went to the doctor AGAIN :/ We saw a wonderful nurse practitioner, and she agreed that the hives looked like an allergic reaction. The only thing we can come up with is pumpkin since Jackson had a pumpkin whoopie pie, pumpkin butter, and a pumpkin muffin in about a 36-hour time period. She was also surprised at what his throat looked like, so she ordered another strep test. It also came back negative! We couldn't believe it! Oh well... The nurse really encouraged me to give the Benadryl another go, so we were off to Target for a THIRD time for a prescription for steroids and some Benadryl. They gave him a dose of steroids in the office at the doctor and I gave him Benadryl at Target. We got home and had lunch and naptime. After his nap, Jackson's face was almost totally cleared up! It was a miracle! He was still a bit itchy, but in a really good mood :)
Unfortunately, the nighttime scenario was not so pleasant. We are pretty sure the steroids messed with Jackson's sleep, because he was awake and upset for a couple of hours in the middle of the night. He was crying for various things, and I finally got him to go back to sleep by putting more lotion on his legs and laying with him in his bed. At the same time, Graham was pretty fussy, and needed me to lay with HIM! Things are never quite as easy to deal with in the middle of the night... As the days went on, we are pretty sure the steroids not only messed with sleep, but also made Jackson have to use the bathroom more often and he was really hungry and thirsty!
As we were dealing with all of these surprise issues, I kept lamenting the fact that Jackson had missed two days of school and this was supposed to be my week to finally get a schedule going! We had a couple weeks of school under our belt, I was finished painting my new mudroom cubbies, and it was just time to settle into a routine. I also HATE having to choose between the boys. I made it a goal in the beginning, and did a much better job sticking to it in the first month or so, to not hold Jackson to crazy standards just because he is older. He is still just (almost) four! But in the heat of a stressful day, it's so easy to just expect him to be perfect and super helpful and then get aggravated when he isn't. Add to that him not feeling well, and that is just a recipe for a disastrous mood. I felt like I was constantly juggling one of the boys needing something while trying to keep the house in some sort of order, cook dinner, and find a minute or two to myself. I know I was really stressed and not very fun to be around, but each day when Josh got home from work, his first question was what he could do to help me! He is just that amazing :) Unfortunately, there wasn't much he could do since we can't control the boys' moods and Jackson really wanted me to help him while he wasn't feeling well. That is REALLY hard now that Graham is here. If Graham is settled and I have two hands to do something, it's not always what I want to do to turn around to do something for Jackson. I know that sounds awful, but I might like to go do something relaxing or mindless. Plus, Josh is quite capable of doing anything Jackson needs! We just kept reminding ourselves that he didn't feel well, was on new medicine, and is still just a little guy!
Fast forward to today and things are feeling much better :) Jackson was well enough for us to head to the Farmer's Market on Thursday morning as well as his first day of Basketball Class (more on that later)! On Friday, it was off to school for Jackson!!! Hallelujah! He was a bit hesitant to go into his class, but he really ended up just asking for an extra hug and then he went right in. I used preschool time to start cleaning the house (I finished during naptime) and this made me feel MUCH better! I hadn't been able to get the whole house clean at one time for quite some time. I like the idea of doing one or two chores a day, and by the end of the week you have a clean house, but I much prefer getting it all done at once! Jackson had a great morning at school, much less itchy, and we got to hand out with the Yanceys in the evening--a much needed outing! Jackson is definitely still catching up on sleep and he's not quite himself yet with the medicines on board, but I am SOOO glad his rash is cleared up! It was really bad looking :( I suppose we have many more instances where we will have to "choose" one boy over the other, but I will just try to grab as many snuggles and special moments in between that I can...

Un-Official Start to Fall!
This is SOOO true! We didn't quite cover all of these fun things, this weekend, but we did have sweatpants and sweatshirts, football, chili, pumpkin treats, and cool weather!
Look at this snuggliness!!! Super exciting to pull out some cooler-weather clothes! Graham was wearing a super cute hoodie on Saturday, and once he was all swaddled, this is all that showed :)
Jackson put together this awesome combination while playing...
...and then he wanted the dinosaur to eat the camera! Of course!
The Bascoms came over to hang out and we got to do lots of our favorite things we share: watch football, bake and eat pumpkin treats (pumpkin whoopie pies and pumpkin pie crescents), snuggle babies, and catch up :)
Could these two be any cuter???
My newest kitchen helper! Don't worry, I know all about Bumbo safety, and I was right at the island the whole time (except taking this picture)!
He really liked hanging out and watching me cook! However, the next night I tried it, and he wasn't too excited. I think he has to be in just the right mood at this point...

A Weekend at Windjammer
I just love going to visit Aunt Murph and Uncle Larry in Staunton (their street name is Windjammer, and ever since I met Josh the family refers to the house as Windjammer)! We went down the weekend of the 8th. This was a beautiful weekend for it--the weather was finally starting to turn cooler!!!
We got to introduce everyone to Graham!!! This picture is of Graham with his great-aunts: Lil and Martha! As always, Aunt Murph and Uncle Larry put on a lovely get together. There was TONS of food and good family time.
Aunt Murph and Uncle Larry got a new dog! Really, the adopted their grand-dog to live at their house. Tokyo, or Yoke, was Kerry's dog. He is a fun dog, and Jackson had a GREAT time playing with him!
Jackson got this fun sharkfin headband, but we had to have some fun with it on Graham!
Shark Baby!!!
Shark Baby eat his new bunny!
Josh and Graham visiting with Great Aunt Betty and Great Uncle Melvin
On Sunday morning we headed over to Gypsy Hill Park to walk around. We specifically went to visit the ducks and play on the playground :)
Jackson and Yoke checking out the residents
We didn't actually buy any duck food since they take nickels rather than the quarters we came equipped with, but there were some remnants in the machines!
Clearly, Graham was really engaged ;) He had a good nap, however! After the park, we went back to the house and relaxed on the screened-in porch with lunch and some more catching up.

Jackson's First Day of Preschool!!!
We have been looking forward to this day for a LONG time!!! Friday was Jackson's first day of Preschool! He was pretty pumped and was a good sport with me taking pictures :)
September 7, 2012--First Day of 3-Year Old Preschool!
Jackson and Mommy on the first day!
Little brother sending off big brother
Daddy worked from home so he could do drop-off and pick-up with me!!!
Walking into school!
After school outside the school sign
This is my current subway art sign in my kitchen--just for Jackson!
Jackson's first art project! As promised, he was super excited to take it out of his backpack to show us :)
We did not get a ton of details, but here's what we know:
We dropped Jackson off at 9:30, and he went right in! I cannot believe what a difference a year makes! At this time last year, I was hoping we would sign Jackson up for preschool, but not sure at all how he would do. At that time he was fine being left as long as a friend was there. Lots of Jackson's friends are in preschool, but nowhere close to our house, so I didn't know how it would go. Now, I didn't even give it a second thought--he did great!!! Mrs. Hughes said he had a wonderful day when we picked him up. Apparently they had Goldfish for snack, and Jackson had his allotted two servings, but didn't get any more (they only get seconds since it's just a snack). The art project was to color in the teddy bear and glue on the colored balloons with his classmates' names on them. He was super excited about it!
It was pretty crazy getting lunch in him and then getting him down for a nap, but we did it. I'm sure it will get easier once we hammer out a schedule. He also barely took a nap... Not a welcome change after the four and three hour naps Jackson took earlier this week :( Again, I know this will all work itself out. I am just so thankful he had a great first day and can't wait to go back :)

Preschool Orientation!!!
Jackson has been looking forward to this day for quite some time, as have I!!! Yesterday morning he and I went for a 45-minute orientation for preschool. He had such a good time, and he even started to cry when it was time to leave! LOL He is going to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church's three-day preschool. He will attend Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 9:30am-12:30pm. The ONLY downside to this gig is he doesn't get to ride the school bus yet. He is DEFINITELY counting down the days to that one...
I didn't get any picture in his "home" classroom, but the first activity was to sit on the rug and work to arrange the letters of his name. This was SO frustrating for me, as a teacher/parent combo, since I KNOW he can spell his name, but he wasn't doing it!!! None of the other kids got it either... Jackson's teacher's name is Mrs. Hughes and there are three other boys ins class and one girl.
Next we moved over to the art room where each child got to play with some play-dough while the parents heard about art and science.
The quiet room was next and the kids worked on puzzles while we heard more about the mornings. This classroom is another class's "home" classroom--I like that the kids won't be in the same room all morning.
The kids sat down to have snack while the parents went to listen to more of the business side of things from Mrs. McCarty, the preschool director. The picture above is of the kids folding their hands to say a blessing before eating their snack--they were so sweet :) Cheez-its and apple juice were a BIG hit!
Josh and I LOVED getting so much time with Jackson to do fun, family things! But, we are both so excited to see how he will grow this next year. We are looking forward to new friends, new skills, and just some good maturation!
Pictures from the first day coming soon...

Graham is Three Months Old!
Since we were gone for Graham's actual two-month "birthday," we went when he was about two and a half months old. Here are his stats:
Weight: 13.25 pounds (56th %ile)
Height: (2nd %ile)--we don't think this was an accurate measurement!
Head Circumference: (97th %ile)
He survived his first road trip--the biggest one we have taken as a family so far!!! On the one hand it was an awesomely convenient time to take him all over, but on the other hand, he and I are so closely connected at this stage in his life, I felt like a lot of people missed out on baby snuggle time :( We will just have to make some more visits soon (although not clustered together in this fashion...)
Graham is showing motions towards a bit of a schedule. After his first morning feeding he is really alert and happy. He loves to spend this time on his playmat, and Jackson loves it too since he can really interact with him. He definitely lets us know when he is done and ready for a nap. He took his first nap in his bed while we were in Meridian at the Buerstattes' house. He slept in the Pack-n-Play for about an hour and then over an hour more in Josh's arms. SCORE! He is stretching out his daytime feedings more now and it isn't uncommon for him to go closer to four hours between. He had a bout of lots of spit-up incidents earlier this month, but that seems to have gotten much better. I'm not sure what it was all about--he was never sad when it happened! At night, he usually lays down at 8 with Jackson, and then he might sleep until midnight, or he might give us an extra few hours! Either way, he is just getting up once in the middle of the night. I still don't mind, especially since he goes right back to sleep! He eats again closer to 7 and then we are usually up for the day.
Graham has fantastic facial expressions! Most of them are happy, silly ones, but he is THE MASTER of The Pouty Lip! Holy smokes! This kid just puts that adorable lip out there and everyone, "AWWWs!" LOL He also has started doing a whimper that sounds like he is trying to hard to hold back his tears. It is super pathetic, and it gets me every time. He LOVES having someone to interact with whenever possible. His favorite place to be is still in our arms, but he's much more patient now if he's in his bouncy seat, swing, or on his playmat. I'm still struggling with the transfer of careat from car to stroller, but he's getting a bit better.
We LOVE looking at this adorable little face each day, and Jackson is an even better big brother than we could have imagined!!! We are looking forward to many, many more days of cuteness :)

Go Cubs! Go Nats!
Who to cheer for when your all-time favorite team is playing your newly adopted hometown team? It worked out just as Josh wanted: the Nats won, which was what we really wanted since they are doing so well this year, but the Cubs gave us a few things to cheer about along the way :)
Daddy and Jackson enjoying the game on Labor Day!
Graham enjoyed his SECOND Nationals game (third baseball overall in just as many months!)
We were so excited to get to spend the day with the Yanceys since we haven't seen much of them due to busy schedules since we got back. Jackson and Rachel seemed to enjoy the game, some toys Susie packed, and the day :)
